About the Journal

Aims and Scope

Folklorica (ISSN 1920-0234, eISSN 1920-0242) is a publication of the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Folklore Association (SEEFA), a scholarly, non-profit organization devoted to the exchange of knowledge among scholars interested in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian folklore. The journal publishes articles, surveys, reviews, notices of conferences or expeditions, and announcements from scholars in any field relevant to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian folklore, including anthropology, ethnic studies, history, literature, and musicology. Folklorica is issued annually.

The contents of the journal reflect a wide range of topics related to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian folklore. Folklore includes the study of the creative and expressive dimensions of human experiences and worldviews. This includes oral genres, customary behavior, material culture, and belief. Folklore pays particular attention to related systems of communication and transmission in socio-cultural contexts. As technology constantly reshapes communication, the field of folklore studies continues to expand its methodologies and themes. While some folklorists work with published sources and archival documents, others focus on face-to-face interactions via the ethnography of everyday life, still others explore new trajectories in the virtual world.

Articles in the journal present significant research findings or theoretical analyses. Surveys are narrower in scope and focus on a single context or issue.

Folklorica only accepts original submissions. Submissions must not be under concurrent consideration by any other journal. Do not send a previously published article, even if it has appeared in another language. There are no fees for submissions.

Folklorica publishes materials in English. Authors are encouraged to translate their manuscripts into English prior to submission. Submissions in Slavic and East European languages may be considered if a translator is available.

Manuscripts normally should not exceed 35 pages in length (including endnotes).

Indexing

Folklorica is indexed in SCOPUS, EBSCO, the American Bibliography of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ABSEES), Humanities Source Ultimate, and the MLA International Bibliography.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts are evaluated first by the Folklorica editor. If found appropriate, manuscripts are submitted for “double blind” review to two outside reviewers. Reviewers are anonymous. When a decision has been made on whether to accept or reject a manuscript, authors are notified via email. Acceptance is outright or contingent on the completion of revisions. Rejection is outright or with the option of revision and resubmission for a new evaluation. The Folklorica editor reserves the right to reject or return for revision any material submitted on the grounds of inappropriate subject matter, quality, or length.

Copyright and Licensing

All authors retain ownership of materials submitted to Folklorica. Submissions may be withdrawn at any point during the review process. Once submissions are published in Folklorica, they become a part of the Folklorica record and cannot be removed. Folklorica may change the appearance of materials to maintain design consistency.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication. Their work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Derivative License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgment of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.

Authors can enter separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgment of its initial publication in Folklorica.

Folklorica permits and encourages authors to post items submitted to the journal on personal websites or institutional repositories both prior to and after publication. Authors should provide bibliographic details that credit its publication in Folklorica.

All issues of this journal are freely available in the journal's Archives.

Publication Ethics

Folklorica is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics. The following standards, based on the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (publicationethics.org), outlines the ethical expectations and responsibilities of authors, editors, and reviewers in the publication process. By submitting their work to Folklorica, authors agree to adhere to these publication ethics standards.

  1. Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their work is original and has not been published elsewhere. Plagiarism in any form, including the submission of work that has been previously published or is under consideration elsewhere, is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate rejection of a manuscript. Authors should ensure that the work and/or words of others has been appropriately cited or quoted. Authors must guarantee that their submitted work contains no material that can be construed as libelous or as infringing in any way on the copyright of another party.
  2. Conflict of Interest: All authors and reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest that may influence their evaluation of a manuscript. Reviewers should not consider evaluating manuscripts for which they have any financial, personal, or professional relationships that may affect the impartiality of their judgment.
  3. Authorship: All authors listed on a manuscript must have made a significant contribution to the work and must agree to its publication. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all authors listed on the manuscript have agreed to its submission and are aware of its content.
  4. Peer Review Process: Folklorica operates a rigorous peer review process to ensure the quality and validity of the work published. The review process is confidential, impartial, and objective. Reviewers are expected to provide constructive and fair evaluation of the manuscript. Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation.
  5. Error and Retraction: In instances where an editor finds that a significant error has been published for which a correction needs to be made and in all cases where there is reason for concern about such matters as plagiarism, fabrication of research, or duplicate publication, the editor will take all appropriate measures to clarify the situation and to amend the article in question. Retractions will only be made in exceptional circumstances, such as cases of duplicate publication, plagiarism, or data fabrication.
  6. Confidentiality: The editor will ensure the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and the review process. The editor and any other editorial staff will not disclose information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, and any other editorial advisers. Reviewers must not use the information or ideas obtained during the review process for their own benefit or for the benefit of others.
  7. Data Fabrication and Falsification: Fabrication or falsification of data is strictly prohibited. If such an act is discovered, Folklorica will retract the publication and inform relevant parties. In the event that the editor is made aware of any allegation of research misconduct, the editor will follow COPE’s guidelines in dealing with allegations of research misconduct.
