Abstract

This article explores the intriguing intersection of progressive education and socialism, focusing on the Organic School in Fairhope, Alabama, and its connections to progressive educators in the Soviet Union during the 1920s. Founded in 1907 by Marietta Johnson, the school gained international recognition for its innovative approach, attracting prominent figures like John Dewey and Upton Sinclair. Despite its fame, no evidence of direct influence or collaboration with Soviet educators was found. However, the research reveals a fascinating story of Willard Hemenway Edwards, a teacher at the Organic School, who became deeply fascinated with the Soviet experiment and its ideals. The article presents the captivating journey of Willard and his wife Helen Edwards, shedding light on the intriguing dynamics between American progressive education and Soviet socialism during a pivotal moment in history.
