Abstract

The article offers analysis of Alaska’s multifaceted historical role as a pivotal geopolitical and cultural crossroads that has profoundly shaped the trajectory of Russian-American relations over several centuries. The article explores the era of Russian America (late 18th – mid19th century), tracing the establishment and operations of the RussianAmerican Company (RAC), the chartered colonial enterprise that served as the de facto administrator of Russia’s North American possessions. Special attention is given to the RAC’s dual function: as an economic engine driving fur trade and exploration, and as a vehicle for extending imperial influence through outposts, missions, and alliances with Indigenous peoples. The study then examines key diplomatic milestones, including the RussoAmerican Treaty of 1824, which delineated maritime boundaries and regulated commercial privileges in the North Pacific. These agreements not only formalized spheres of influence but also reflected evolving dynamics and competing claims in the region. The framework established by these treaties particularly provisions safeguarding the RAC’s trading rights until 1844 is analyzed. A portion of the article addresses the 1867 sale of Alaska to the United States, situating this transfer within broader geopolitical currents: Russia’s postCrimean War reorientation, American expansionism, and the economic challenges facing the RAC. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the Russian Orthodox Church, which maintained parishes, schools, and linguistic traditions long after political sovereignty shifted. the Russian Orthodox Church presence became a crucial conduit for preserving Russian identity among Alaska Natives and settlers. The article underscores Alaska’s enduring significance as a lens through which to understand centuries of transnational interaction.
