Judith Smith is Professor of American Studies and Director of the American Studies
MA Program at University of Massachusetts, Boston. She teaches and writes
about film and media history, ethnicity and race, family and women’s history. Her
books include Visions of Belonging: Family Stories, Popular Culture, and Postwar
Democracy, 1940-1960 (2004) and Family Connections: A History of Italian and
Jewish Immigrant Lives in Providence, Rhode Island, 1900-1950 (1985); she is also
a co-author of American Identities: An Introductory Textbook (2005) and of Evolution
of American Urban Society (various editions 1987-2010).
