    A survey of the contemporary world provides no shortage of ways in which social order appears to teeter on the brink of collapse. The global rise of anti-democratic movements, the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine, cascading global climate crises, and the persistence of gender and racial inequities are but a few examples of the social chaos in recent years. In response, counter-movements attempt to address these crises, but their ability to meaningfully restructure social conditions remains unclear. For the 37th volume of Social Thought and Research, graduate students and early career scholars have explored ways in which taken-for-granted social structures, norms, and bureaucracy have been upended and reconstituted in response to social, economic, and cultural change across the globe.

    Re-imagining the American Dream

    Social science researchers have directly challenged and problematized the ideology of the "American Dream” by critically analyzing and exposing the fallacies and consequences of neoliberalism, the instability of the nuclear American family structure, and the dire consequences of marginalization and colonization. Critical analysis only takes us so far; social scientists also have a role to play in developing solutions for imagined futures. In this volume of Social Thought and Research, graduate and early career scholars have analyzed the "American Dream's" ideological premise and conceptualized possibilities for imagined futures.
