A Thirst Unquenched: Feminist Resistance and Narrative Silence

Review of 'No Water Quenches Her,' Beirut: Difaf Publications, 2017, by Najat Abdul Samad

Abstract

This review analyzes Najat Abdul Samad’s novel No Water Quenches Her (2017), a haunting depiction of gendered violence and silenced desire within Druze society in Sweida, Syria. Through the tragic story of Hayat—a woman whose life is marked by confinement and erasure—the novel challenges patriarchal systems maintained by both male dominance and inherited female complicity. While Abdul Samad’s work bravely highlights systemic oppression and makes women’s suffering visible, it avoids offering narrative resolution, leaving readers with a tension between testimony and change. The review frames the novel as a transnational feminist contribution, examining its focus on silence as both a sign and judgment, and questioning the boundaries of resistance in environments where even storytelling is limited by gendered inheritance. Lastly, the discussion links the novel’s fictional silence to Abdul Samad’s real-life activism amid recent sectarian violence in Sweida in 2025, emphasizing the urgent need for narratives that go beyond lamenting toward imagining feminist futures.
