About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Kansas Journal of Medicine (KJM) publishes original research, brief reports, journal club articles, reviews, commentaries, and case reports on all aspects of clinical medicine, health care delivery, health policy, and medical education. The journal is a publication of the University of Kansas Medical Center (ISSN: 1948-2035). Although submissions are not restricted by geography or affiliation, authors with current or past association within the institution or Kansas are targeted, as well as manuscript topics related to Kansas healthcare institutions and populations.

KJM publishes on a bi-monthly rotation, or six issues yearly (Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/Jun, Jul/Aug/, Sep/Oct, Nov/Dec), with the occasional supplemental issue. 

Open Access

KJM is an open-access journal, which means that all content is freely available immediately upon publication without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, per the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC-ND) License., without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.

KJM does not charge authors any fees to publish in the journal.

Copyright

Authors retain copyright in their work. All articles in KJM are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC-ND) License.

Peer Review

KJM adheres to rigorous academic standards. All articles submitted to the journal undergo a comprehensive review process. Articles are first internally reviewed for relevance to KJM and scientific merit by the Publication Manager and Editor-in-Chief. Only articles deemed relevant will be sent for external review. 

Relevant articles will be sent for external double-blind peer review. The completed recommendations from the reviewers inform the Editor-in-Chief's decision. Authors are provided reviewers' feedback and given a chance to revise. If revisions are accepted by the senior editorial team, the paper is sent for final review and publishing. 

Publication Ethics

KJM prioritizes the integrity of academic research and the publishing process. As such, the journal follows best practices for publishing and the principles of transparency and best practices in scholarly publishingincluding those outlined in the Publication ethics and related editorial policies and Peer review sections. 

Research Integrity

KJM upholds high standards for all research intended and actually published in the journal. The journal expects authors to abide by the following principles when publishing their research, which are based on Cambridge University's Research Integrity Statement. These principles include: 

  • Honesty in all aspects of research
  • Scrupulous care, thoroughness, and excellence in research practice
  • Transparency and open communication
  • Care and respect for all participants in and subjects of research

 Anyone who believes that research published by the Kansas Journal of Medicine does not meet these principles, should raise their concerns to the editorial team. 

Human Subjects Research

Any research involving humans must be approved (and clearly stated within the submitted text) by relevant ethics committee(s) and should conform to international ethical and legal standards for research. KJM also expects authors to respect human participants' right to privacy, and to gain any necessary consent to publish before submitting. 

Fraudulent Research and Research Misconduct

Any claims of fraudulent research or research misconduct will be taken seriously. The first concern will be with the integrity of the content the journal publishes. A rigorous and fair investigation will be conducted, in conjunction with the appropriate institutions or organizations. Any publication found to include fraudulent results or misconduct will be retracted or removed from submission. 

Retractions and Corrections

KJM will consider retractions, corrections, or expressions of concern in line with COPE's Retraction Guidelines.

Archiving

In the event that KJM or KU Libraries stops operating, the journal is indexed in PubMed Central (PMC) and is therefore electronically backed up for long term digital preservation. The journal is indexed under the title Kans J Med in PMC, as well as PubMed.

Plagiarism Statement

Authors must submit original work that is properly cited and approved by all listed authors. By submitting to KJM, authors take full responsibility for their scholarly work and its legitimacy. Submissions suspected of plagiarism - in full or in part - will be rejected. Reports of suspected plagiarism in KJM published or submitted articles should be made to the senior editorial team via email.
