Provisional Identification Keys

Accurate species identification underpins biological research, yet it is often limited by outdated or inaccessible keys and a shortage of trained taxonomists. To help address this challenge, the Journal of Melittology introduces Provisional Identification Keys, a new section dedicated to publishing draft and preliminary bee identification keys. These clearly labeled working resources will facilitate identification, preserve expert knowledge, support training, encourage collaboration, and complement formal taxonomic revisions.

This initiative follows the Journal’s recent collaboration with the U.S. National Native Bee Monitoring Research and Coordination Network to publish a series of articles promoting standardized and reproducible methods for wild bee research. Just as those contributions addressed a community need for methodological standardization, Provisional Identification Keys responds to the growing demand for accessible identification resources. The Journal of Melittology welcomes submissions and community feedback as this resource continues to develop.
